Different Masthead Styles

I started off with the font on the black background placed under each other, I felt that there was too much space wasted by this design on the cover of the magazine. I started in Photoshop with the text in plain black, I then coloured it a dark red as during research I found that red was popular among my genre and target audience.I then used a faded brush to add the black shadow over the top third of the text, I felt this gave it a more natural look and did not clash with the background.

To solve the issue of wasting space I moved the 'Rock' to the same line the 'Of' was on, I feel that overall this has made it more effective as it gives me more space on the front cover for my images and stories. I got my peers to feedback on this change and overall hey agreed that this was a better design.

I then started to design to make it standout more from other magazines by using a white background around the original design of the font to see how it looked, I thought that the white was unneeded in this amount which led to the next image in which I took out the majority of the block white and only left a thin outline however after peer feedback I kept with the second design.

Font Research Update

After I posted my font research previously I tried out some of the fonts on a mock up of a front cover and I decided that I did not like them, I then found a font called "Red Rocket" and used Photoshop to change the colour to the specific red that I wanted to use. The font came available in several different styles so above is a collage of the styles that I liked the most, I have chosen these because I feel that they will appeal to my target audience more than others because they are more creative and are more noticeable.

Target for today

To continue with the creation of my main task and choose a font to use.

Double page spread flat plan

The puff will include the word 'Exclusive' in a black background in blue/ green text, this will attract the readers attention as they turn the page.

The main image will be of the bands guitarist recording in the studio, playing the guitar, this will be appropriate miss-en-scene for the image as it links directly to the article title.

The title will consist of the story and the band name, the story will be in a different font from the band name, it will be done so that the band name stands out more from the page.

The articles will be layered over part of the main image which will continue onto the second page and will have transparent boxes behind the text so that it is easier to read.

Double page spread deconstructions

1) Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place?
A: Yes, there are trailing wires on the floor to connect the instruments to the PA system and to the Mac for editing, there are also instruments hanging on the wall which could fall if someone knocked them.
2) What will you do to ensure these risks are minimized?
A: To minimize the risk of the wires causing people to trip and fall I can remove the wires, as it is only a photo shoot the equipment does need to be functioning so removing the cables will be an option. As for the hanging instruments, I will minimize this risk by informing the models of the danger as removing them from the photos will remove an important part of the miss-en-scene.
3) Will the time of day/ weather affect the outcome of your photos? Have you allowed for this?
A: As my photo shoot will take place indoors the time of day and weather will have no affect on the outcome of my photos.
4) Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?
A: I have considered the background of my photos, the image for my front cover will have the background removed so using a blank background will be important, as for the rest I will be using an environment natural to the genre so the background will already have the instruments and equipment I need.

5) Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?
A: For lighting indoors I will use the natural light but also the camera flash to make the images brighter. I should not encounter any issues with natural lighting or reflective objects.
6)  Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?
A: As the location I am using is my friends home studio I will need to ask him for permission, however he has previously said that I could use it for the photo shoot if i needed too.
7) Do you need to book time in a room?
A: I will not need to book a time in the room however i will have to use it when his band is not practicing.
8)  Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?
A: I am relying on my friends for the photo shoot and that they will bring their equipment with them e.g. guitar and microphone and that they will all come together at the arranged time however if I need a plan B we can wait in the house for them to arrive and we have other guitars that can be used for the photo

November 20th

Today I have started to layout my front cover using the colours I decided on in my brief, I also edited the font for the masthead, this is not complete and still needs the image adding and also the masthead font needs changing.

Location Scout

This is the location I will be using for my photo shoot, this is my friends home studio so I can access it for free and it is easy to get to. It is appropriate for my photo shoot because I am creating a regional rock music magazine, so using a small studio like this is more true to the situation than using photos in a large studio.
The mise-en-scene is also appropriate here as it features several instruments and pieces of recording hardware,

Font Research

I have chosen a selection of fonts that I think would look good when used on my magazine, my favorite fonts from the image above are "BreakAway", "Sanctuary" and "Defused". I chose these fonts because I feel that they best represent the rock genre and also that they will appeal to my target audience as similar fonts have been used on magazines in the past.

Organisation of models

I contacted my models by Facebook as it allowed me to organize quickly and easily, above is the message I sent, detailing costumes, date and time and facial expressions so that everyone was aware of what they were doing.
